The Wild, Wild West We Think We Know Tour
This is a tour to the places where legends were born and the spirits of the pioneers still dwell. Spoiler alert! Some of your most cherished beliefs may be challenged on this tour. The tour includes Sturgis, Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon and the Homestake Gold Mine. As with all our tours, it is highly customizable and can be modified at your request. The tour concentrates on the early history of the Black Hills and the impact of the Gold Rush, but it includes some great sightseeing along with stories and lore.
This is a great experience for those who wish to experience the places where history was made starting in the 1870's and continues today. This tour is designed to give you a sense of place and a chance to visit significant sites in American western history. We may visit museums dedicated to the area's history; walk the streets where the deeds happened, and even see the graves of characters we all know by name and reputation, but never met.
- Sturgis, SD – the home of the famous motorcycle rally and Fort Meade. After the Battle of the Little Big Horn Fort Meade was the base of the 7th Calvary and the place where the Star Spangled Banner was popularized;
- Spearfish Canyon National Scenic Byway – A deep limestone canyon connecting the prairie with the interior Black Hills Mining District. It filled with breath-taking scenery, waterfalls, railroad history and mining legends;
- The Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD – The mine lasted over 100 years and yielded 41 million ounces of gold. But its story is still being written as we speak. It is the location for a new scientific laboratory located nearly one mile beneath the surface of the Earth. It is the place where neutrino research resulted in a Nobel Prize and Dark Matter, Dark Energy and other unique scientific puzzles are under investigation today. See the surface mining artifacts and visit the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center,
- Deadwood, SD – the entire town is a National Historic District. Experience the place where it all got started and has yet to slow down. This is the place where enormous placer gold deposits started a mad dash to the Black Hills that resulted in the Indian Wars and changed the course of history. It is the place where fortunes were made and legends were born. Today it is yours to see and enjoy.
